Improvisation

Most of the time when I perform I leave a space in the show for an unprepared several minutes of music that I attempt to totally make up on the spot; thought you might enjoy this footage from awhile back, that turned out not too bad..

I believe the title is “From My Heart”. And I agree! That was a very special moment at the PICC. I was there too!

The way I remember it, Jim asked an audience member to play 3 notes on the piano. She did, and Jim even commented “it sounds like a commercial.” Then he sat down, and out came this beautiful piece based on this 3 notes. Jim, I have to say the version at the PICC was the one I preferred, more than the CD version. But they’re both good. When Jim was finished, there was a 5 minute (or more) standing ovation. Really really great! That moment is etched in my memory after all these years. Thanks for your music Jim Chappell!

you are amazing jim as always…i was there in the audience when you did an improv in the Philippines that became “in my heart”. it’s been my favorite since…i got your romantic collection book because of it…i play as well!

i really hope you would have a tour here in canada, particularly here in Saskatchewan(Regina city)—i live in a market valley and an arts community town called Lumsden. One of the most beautiful towns here in Saskatchewan…a number people from Michigan have moved here…We’re kinda like Saugatuck without the Marina…
