The Melody
September 10th, 2009 by Jim Chappell | Filed under Uncategorized. For me the melody of a song is like the main actor in a film; it’s the most important character in the mix. So I do my best to make sure it’s a strong enough presence to carry things along.
The melody is also “the voice” that most listeners will remember long after that initial exposure to the song- if we composers can be so lucky!
When it’s right, people can make it a part of themselves, and hum or whistle our gift to them for years to come…
to me the harmony is also important. its like the environment where the main actor is. beautiful harmony n melody make a beautiful song. like ‘dusk’ the first two chords separated by silence is what makes me fall in love with the song. i think the ones with beautiful melody are ‘lullaby’ and ‘gone’ but the chords also makes it beautiful.
to me a good melody with only simple c f g chords pattern doesnt work at all.
anyway keep up the good work, Jim
